5 to kick ass

Asked how terrorism might be counteracted, Frederick Forsyth says: 'The West can only form an "alliance of the civilized" and work on the five fronts on which all covert or "cold" wars are fought: diplomatic, financial, that of lethal action--and, most importantly, by using intelligence and psychological means, i.e. propaganda, persuasion, hearts and minds. You cannot defeat a modern, fanatical terrorist enemy without winning all five.' [Source: 'Note on Author' section in the book The Afghan]

I wish India be considered as part of the West. Or at least, if not the alliance, this is what India as alone should try to do with Pakistani terrorists. If we are already not doing this. I don't see anything being done in this direction by our Government or the Intelligence cadre.

India faces reality

The current war-like situation created by Pakistani based Islam terrorists and ISI together against India if analyzed objectively can beget this:

Now there are Pakistanis who argue that these terrorists are a greater threat to Pakistan than India is. But the fact is that they don't count for much. So one month after Pakistani jihadi terrorists attacked Mumbai, here's the objective reality: the Pakistani people are willing to allow their armed forces to provoke a nuclear war so as to protect terrorist organisations.
The 'peace process' of the last four years was doomed to fail because it refused to accept this fundamental reality. It was based on hope. But hope, to quote George Shultz, is not a policy. The price of ignoring this wisdom should be obvious now. (source link)

Vote for Nobody: A Myth

This chain mail with subject 'Vote 49-O' has been doing the rounds for some time now, but is based on a complete misunderstanding of the statutory provisions.

Neither the Consitution of India nor the Representation of the People Act, 1950 contain any provision to suggest that failure or refusal to vote can have any bearing on the outcome of an election at which other people have duly voted for the candidate of their choice. The provision in question, "49-O", is actually a mere Rule which has been enacted in order to deal with a peculiarity of the electronic voting system which India pioneered. {link ]

Wiki has similar information calling it "Disqualification hoax":

A hoax has been circulating which claims that if the '49-O' votes more than those of the winning candidate, then that poll will be canceled and will have to be re-polled. Furthermore, it claims that the contestants will be banned and they cannot contest the re-polling. This is false and has no basis whatsoever.

A Paradigm of a Sick Mind

Inside the sick mind...

Victimhood: Self-defeatist mindset

"Offstumped " does a very good dissection of Arun Shourie's article  on looking at Gandhi's and Tilak's interpretation of Gita.

The following stand by Offstumped on Shourie's view is what I believe in strongly too:

Mr. Shourie then goes on to lament the twin evils that imperil the fabric of our society - aggresive proselytism and Jihadist Terrorist, but in doing so he unwittingly adopts the second "Progressive Liberal" template of "Victimhood".
There is a real vice here. The three great religions that originated in Palestine and Saudi Arabia — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — have been exclusivist — each has insisted that it alone is true — and aggressive. The Indic religions — Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism — have been inclusive, they have been indulgent of the claims of others. But how may the latter sort survive when it is confronted by one that aims at power, acquires it, and then uses it to enlarge its dominion? How is the Indic sort to survive when the other uses the sword as well as other resources — organised missionaries, money, the state — to proselytise and to convert?
Offstumped must once again respectfully disagree with Mr. Shourie when he succumbs to the emotional weakness of victimhood.

By viewing the Hindu way of life from the western monotheistic template of religion we suffer paranoia and anger while failing to see that what appears on the outside as a weakness is an inherent strength.

You sir miss the point on how we survived 4000 years of civilization while many have perished in the sands of time.  It survives not because of a central controlling authority or proselytising agency - Pontificate or Caliphate. Its a decentralized faith. It can morph and evolve and transform itself in a million ways. It survives because of this inherent strength. It is like how species surive through the process of Natural Evolution.

If today there is a perceived threat it is not primarily because of the monotheistic faiths but because of our intellectual atrophy in not recognizing this inherent strength. We have attempted to monotheize this way of life in our knee-jerk response to the perceived threats from the monotheistic faiths

Save America from Globalization

Listened to this Economist, Mr Venkatesh, who strongly and with witty anecdotes, explain the imbalances of globalization and capitalization as practiced by the Americans, and thus the rest of the world.

He gives explanation in simple statements about what is causing the present economic recession and the history behind it. He also goes on to tell what countries like India, China, Japan, et al have been doing all this while to even worsen this downfall.

And also he seems to provide some swadeshi solution to this problem of artificial Dollar dominance and the aggressive US hijacking of the World economy. He preaches in improving domestic consumption and to keep trust in the institution of Indian family system. An indian housewife, he says, takes care of household economy as well as National economy.

To add, the failure of the swadeshi idea was the reason for us hatching on to the idea of globalization. Not a single swadeshi product manufactured and service provided were of any reasonably right standard/quality since Independence till 1991 when Indian opened its market for the world.

Seamless access to EDA tools

A company called Xuropa launched an online tradeshow platform that could greatly reduce the cost of sales for EDA companies and enable greater access to designers to evaluate tools.

Cadence is already providing a service similar to Xuropa as "hosted VCAD". News that Synopsys too might offer similar service soon. These kind of services mightily help startups in efficient use of money on tools and engineers.

Is this only with iPhone?

To place and route with an iPhone. As it is said in the post link, this is impractical but fun, yes. But this doesn't necessarily impress anything useful about iPhone. This fun could be tried on any other high end phone with similar features as is on iPhone. This geeky fun doesn't make use of any special feature of iPhone that is not found/available on any other high end phones. But this is i-PHONE, of all things in universe, of course!

Few links on Mangalore Imbroglio

Links I found relevant while digging truth on Mangalore issue. Might help some of you in initiating your own search for truth.

Our Home Minister's blog has reports and pictures on the Mangalore issue:
http://drvsacharya.blogspot.com/2008/09/attacking-fellow-human-being-which.html

A proof of abuse of Hindu Gods by New Life group of Christians: http://greathindu.com/

Damaging idols of Christian beliefs is derogatory. true. Where did this happen and why? Newspapers tell the answers.
It is just as true as Goa Inquisition .

When all of a sudden most christian groups are disowning New Life, it is because they (catholics and protestants) see more people from their own group getting converted to New Life (why? need some more digging into this matter), and are mostly worried that they may see their churches empty as is happening in US.

Leave the Mangalore issue to the local leaders from both communities to sort it out. The center shouldn't divert the attention  from the war on terror and their failure in fighting this war.

Bird's eye view on US financial crisis

To recount briefly, there was a housing bubble in the US and it burst. With asset prices falling, there was a rush to sell assets. But if everyone rushes to sell, the prices fall. This leads to a downward spiral called a 'debt deflation'. The housing bubble was created over years of easy money thanks to Greenspan, and subprime mortgage lending. The pendulum of market sentiment swung from the one extreme of greed to the other extreme of fear, as it always eventually does.

To support the banks who went bust because of this mortgage lending,

  1. the US Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department have asked for $700 billion to buy distressed mortgage-related assets.
  2. Add to that the $200 billion to rescue the mortgage guarantee firms Freddie Mac and Fannie May.
  3. Top it off with the loan of $85 billion to keep the giant insurance company American International Group (AIG) afloat.

The total assistance allocated to prop up the financial system so far – and it is anyone's guess how much more will be spent eventually – is approximately the annual GDP of India, a country of a billion people.

All this spending by the US government will raise the public debt of the US to around $11.3 trillion. That makes it the biggest borrower in the world. The creditors, among others, are the central banks of many countries such as Japan, China, the oil-rich nations, and even India. Many countries maintain foreign reserves in US dollar denominated financial instruments. The US borrows approximately $2 billion dollars from the rest of the world every day.

Relevant question to ask and find the answer to is: Why does the world permit the US to get away with it?

The answer could be:

It is said that if owe the bank a little money, and are unable to repay, you are in trouble; but if you owe the bank a billion dollars that you are unable to repay, the bank is in trouble. In the larger context, the US owes the rest of the world a lot of money. If it cannot pay it back, the rest of the world is in trouble. Therefore, the rest of the world has to make sure that the US never fails. That is why the US continues to get a massive line of countries(!) credit –- often from relatively very poor countries such as China which has lent the US an estimated $2 trillion.

Why should the US rescue the banks in the first place?

The US government rescued the US financial institutions it did because as noted before they are too big to fail. The US government is able to spend all that money it does not have simply because the US is too big to fail. The domestic financial crisis could have snowballed into an international financial crisis, the beginning of which would have been a crisis of confidence among the investors of the corporation known as the US. All these financial institutions in turn are linked to other financial institutions globally and the contagion could spread unless action is taken urgently. Financial insolvency is contagious. By nationalizing Freddie and Fannie, and giving a bridging loan to AIG, the US government put a backstop to the slide

What could happen next?

Economists estimate that the financial crisis will cost it around two percentage points in GDP growth for the next couple of years because recession in the US is a given. Global economic slowdown is also guaranteed. The financial system cannot be isolated from the economic system.

Which is of course very depressing news for India because India any slowdown of the global economy will adversely impact India's growth.

Raghu Dixit - Kannada Folk Rock

soruthihudu maneya maaligi (ಸೋರುತಿಹುದು ಮನೆಯ ಮಾಳಿಗಿ...) The roof is leaking…with ignorance, the singer laments! A famous song written by Saint Shishunaala Sharif, this song has seen many versions rendered by many singers of Karnataka. Raghu’s melody attempts here to give it a blues guitar feel on the latino beat!

The roof is leaking
The roof is leaking with ignorance
The roof is leaking
The roof is leaking...
There is no one to strengthen the timber
In this darkness that surrounds me
I cannot climb up there
The wooden beam eaten by termites is broken
The bolts holding the beam have given away
The frame for the thatched tiles has holes in it
I cannot climb up there
The dry grass on the roof is filled with filth
And is torn and ants are all over it
The mud is not able to hold the water
The inside and the outside have become one
Oh mother! Listen to me with mercy
Heavy rains have come down on me
But I have faith in Shishunaaladeesha
He will protect me.

gudugudiya sedi nodo (ಗುಡುಗುಡಿಯಾ ಸೇದಿ ನೋಡೊ): Raghu’s rendition of one of the poems written by Saint Shishunaala Sharif, a 19th century spiritual poet of North Karnataka, South India. Shishunaala is popular for his simple metaphors to explain intricate philosophies of life. This song urges the listener to smoke a Hookah (a smoking pipe) to understand how one should lead life! Open the small cloth bag called mind, pull out the hash called greed/lust, crush it in a chillum called faith and light it with a fire called intelligence, Smoke that Hookah, he says

The song translation is available as subtitles in the video.

India's Nuclear Deal

Who is lying? Our PM or the US President? (US presidents have a rich tradition in lying to the congress) Does it matter any how?

Read this today's TOI article for some answers:

[...] At the end of the day, the US cannot take any position other than to assert that it has the right to terminate cooperation in such an eventuality. On India's part, we have been equally vigorous in maintaining our right to test in compelling circumstances. This argument would be decided by sovereign decisions and national interests, not by legalistic wording.

While Mr. Arun Shourie declares that it is indubitably our PM MMS who is lying (The article is pasted below in this blog post link.) Mr. Shourie has given several solid proofs about the way the present government, and so does the managed parts of the media, have been blatantly declaring that the Nuclear Agreement is in complete favor of India (One major agreement in this support is that India has complete rights to test the Nuclear bomb, even if it is meant for peaceful purpose, without the deal being hijacked neither by US nor by other nations who are involved with us in nuclear commerce.)

Current Update: India gets NSG waiver. This doesn't yet mean that India can get technology immediately. This deal will now go to the US congress for approval.

The first few paras in the NDTV report gives us the sense of how successful India in clinching the support of NSG.

The 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has finally given its nod to the Indo-US nuclear deal in Vienna on Saturday.

Ending three decades of isolation, India has joined the elite nuclear club. The NSG waiver has come through on the third day of the crucial talks in Vienna after push from the highest political level, the opposing countries gave their nod.

Sources say apart from External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement, there is no reference to ban on tests or termination of deal if India tests.
[...]Atomic Energy's chief negotiator in Vienna Ravi B Grover told NDTV that it's a clean waiver for India at the NSG, changes in the draft made have been mutually agreed upon.(emphasis mine)

The Big Blue - Mermaid scene

I came across a very touching dialogue in the movie - "The Big Blue". This dialogue comes at a  very romantically charged-up time in the movie when both the lead characters have discovered that they have fallen in love and are trying to convey their feelings. They keep in touch constantly thru phone and in one of their light-hearted conversations the female lead asks her lover to tell her a story. He is a deep-diving passionate and he tells her his ambitions as a story -

Do you know what you're supposed to do to meet a mermaid?
You go down to the bottom of the sea,
where the water isn't even blue anymore,
where the sky is only a memory,
and you float there, in the silence.
And you stay there, and you decide,
that you'll die for them.
Only then do they start coming out.
They come, and they greet you,
and they judge the love you have for them.
If it's sincere, if it's pure,
they'll be with you,
and take you away forever.

This is one of the finest scenes in the movie. Available on youtube.

61

It is India's 61st independence day.

Abhinav Bindra winning India's first individual gold in Olympics after 28 years is indeed a great feat. This is his win, not India's. Though, many state governments wants to honor him with the tax payer's money. Probably, W. Bengal, Tripura, and Kerala governments might be the only three states not happy with Abhinav for how dare he defeat a Chinese in China?!

I read a nice article occasioning this day in today's Mint. The article is reproduced below.

If I Were Prime Minister...

My dear countrymen, countrywomen, brothers, sisters and dear children. Today we celebrate the 61st anniversary of our independence.

But given recent events and the disenchantment many Indians feel over the government, today I will diverge from my speeches past in this august location of the Red Fort, where our forefathers defended and fought for our freedom. I will not invoke the tricolour or the words of Mahatma Gandhi or even those of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Because, my brothers and sisters, we have reached a critical moment in our nation’s history and the responsibility of its citizens. The state of India and the many fractious Indians within are in crisis, making hindsight and nostalgia a most useless exercise.

Let me be the first head of state to say that perhaps government will not be the answer to your problems. You are.

Thus, I dedicate these words not to the two-thirds of the nation I usually pander to — farmers — but the other two-thirds: our nation’s youth, those under the age of 35 who stand on the cusp of whether this 61-year-old experiment will prosper or sputter.

For at least two years now, I have come here and laid out my mission for this country: An India that is united in thought, not divided by religion and language. An India that is united in Indianness, not divided by caste and region. An India that is united in seeking new opportunities for growth, not divided by disparities. An India that is caring and inclusive.

I admit today, my fellow citizens, my government has failed on many counts. My party, particularly, has helped fuel this divide with its ambiguous policies on caste and religion. While affirmative action is definitely needed to correct ills, the current system treats lower castes like second-class citizens on college campuses, while general-caste students run around telling everyone how their failure is entirely the fault of others.

Meanwhile, pride in our own Indianness feels shaky. Just as it appears that young people are more confident in their own skin, we have popular nightclubs banning guests in “ethnic” dress. Among lower and upper classes alike, consumer products wage battle with promises of whiter skin.

Our cities have become bastions of resentment between old and new money, old residents and newcomers, often divides cut along ethnic lines. Perhaps you do not flinch when the Diwali party invite in your gated community includes a line saying, “No maids”. The middle class divides the world into two: maids and people.

Opportunities for youth have not been inclusive. Of the one million who graduate every year, only a quarter are ready to report to work. This represents a failure of our education system.

And so today, young people who represent this nation’s future, I offer you an apology. But unlike years past, I make no promises.

Because too many times, from this perch, I have listed all the ways government can and will help your life. Universal education, rural employment, health missions, committees devoted to this and that.

But let today go down in history as the first time an Indian head of state will tell you that government is not the answer to your problems. Don’t get me wrong — there is much we must do, there is much we will do. But somewhere in our conversations about the future of India, we have lost the covenant, the partnership between a people and their leaders, and the idea that only together they can make a country great.

So, brothers and sisters, I have no answers. You do.

For proof of this, look no further than our own home-grown hero Abhinav Bindra, who did us proud in Beijing with his gold medal in a 10m air-rifle competition. It marked India’s first gold medal in an individual sport — but no thanks to the government. Rather, Bindra relied partly on his own fortune and that of the Mittal Champions Trust set up by steel tycoon L.N. Mittal; the trust gave him a physical therapist, a trainer and practice equipment.

Young people of this nation, all of you have the power to be like Bindra. You might say you have no access, you have no connections, you have no clout. Bindra, an MBA graduate from a prosperous family in Chandigarh, had all those things and he had talent — and we in government still didn’t help him. But he did not wait.

At some point, all of you have been entrepreneurial enough to make up for the shortcomings of the government. I ask you to apply the same to your life — and to each other.

You cannot wait. If there are no jobs in your village, migrate. If you don’t speak English, learn. And as you go about your life, find ways to give back to where you came from, to each other and to society at large.

Let me conclude by rethinking the obligatory “Jai Hind”. Instead, I ask you to join me in my deep wish that India in its current form should not live much longer. But if the young of this nation rise — in ideals, compassion, service, responsibility, a belief in self and country — then that would be a New India worth celebrating indeed. Jai Hind.

I wanna be a Rockstar - Nickel Back

Lovely song.
Few lines from the song -

[...]
we all just wanna be big rockstars

And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat
And we'll hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
Every good gold digger's
Gonna wind up there
Every Playboy bunny
With her bleach blond hair

Philips DVD player unlock region code

ಆಗ, up/down ಬಟನ್ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿ Region Code ನು ೦ (ಸೊನ್ನೆ) ಸೆಲೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡ್ಬೇಕು.

Another upstart to challenge Intel

Transmeta and Montalvo tried. And failed.

Now, its the turn of another upstart - Qualcomm.

In the fight for building a low-power microprocessor intended for MIDs and low cost PCs, Intel - the Microsoft of uP industry- has been able to ward off any competition that has arisen so far; by hook or crook that is irrelevant for the end users anyhow. Hope this time around Qualcomm, together with AMD and ARM, will be able to put up a good fight to Intel's Atom.

Passing arguments to ModelSim's do file

I came across a query on the possibility of passing info to modelsim's do file.

The first thing that I thought was it is possible by using command line arguments. Since do file is nothing but a Tcl file (ModelSim uses Tcl as its command language), info as arguments can be passed from the command line.

ex: # tcl <filename.tcl> arg1 arg2 ... argn

Then we can use Tcl's global variables argc and argv to access these arguments inside the tcl file.

So by passing the info as arguments to the do file while invoking vsim command, info can be passed on to the do file.

That is: vsim ... -do "<filename.do> arg1 arg2 ... argn"

But when tried with this logic, the arguments passed were not passed on to the file. But instead I saw the vsim arguments echoed on the screen.

echo "No of command line arguments passed are: $argc"

set i 0

foreach index $argv {

echo "argument #$i: $index"

incr i

}

Adding the above lines of code in the do file (run_def.do) and then passing this file as a -do switch option to vsim command as,

vsim {other switch options} -do "run_def.do test1 test2" &

where test1 and test2 are arguments passed on to the do file. Instead of displaying argc as 3 and test1 and test2 as the arguments, it showed 21 as the argc and echoed the arguments of entire vsim command!

Since ModelSim uses Tcl as its command language, vsim invocation too is like running a tcl script with its switch options as command line arguments. The do file passed as -do switch option is taken to be as an argument passed. The script vsim doesn't consider the do file as a separate script file but as a part of vsim script itself. (It can be assumed that the contents of do file gets appended to vsim script at the end). So it is vsim script that reads the do file and executes the commands within it.

This is why argc and argv displayed the results as detailed above. Now it became simple to pass the info to do file. The info can be passed as a generic option of vsim command (-G switch option), which can then be searched for in the do file if the info is known in prior.

For my requirement, the do file had to execute different set of commands according to the category of testcase to be executed. So the do file needed to know the category of the testcase and based on this info selects the branch (if-else) for execution. Also if no category is passed then no branch is to be selected but run as normal.

If a testcase was part of a category then this info was passed as a generic parameter (with -G switch option) of vsim command. The do file searched for this prior defined generic parameter (in top level TB) within the argument list (argv) and then select the branch for execution.

TX_CATEGORY and RX_CATEGORY were defined as generics of boolean type in the top level TB file and the do file searched for either of these strings for the branch selection.

vsim -GTX_CATEGORY=TRUE {....} -do "<run_def.do>"

In the run_def.do file:

set x [lsearch $argv -GTX_CATEGORY=TRUE ]
set y [lsearch $argv -GRX_CATEGORY=TRUE ]
if "$x != -1" { #TX_Category

...

}

if "$y != -1" { #RX_CATEGORY

...

}

run -all

quit -f

The result of lsearch if successful in finding the string is the index of the argument list, argv, and -1 if it fails in finding the string. Each branch contains different set of commands to be run in prior to run -all command. If neither of the the generics are passed, then no branch gets selected, which is the required case.

Reference : Tcl tutorial

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basic Idea on the use of do file:
Do file is basically a script file for modelsim to automate tasks like repetitive simulations for debugging purposes. All the commands that can be run on a ModelSim command prompt can be saved in a macro file (usually named with .do extension), and this file can be passed as an argument to vsim command with -do switch option. Once the ModelSim launches and loads the design, this file will be executed as "do <file.do>" automatically.
Since ModelSim uses Tcl for its command language, the do file can have simulation-specific commands as well as Tcl commands which can include graphic interface features, and a general programming interface for building up complex command procedures.
Idea2:
Use vsim command's generic argument switch (-G) to pass a generic to the design (The design is in VHDL.) This generic value can be used in the top level test-bench to create an event by turning high one of the signal meant only for this purpose. Based on the signal event going high, a particular branch should get selected in the do file.
Using 'when' command of Tcl to wait on an event and executing the branch statement is not possible because of Tcl's sequential execution. If the first when statement doesn't trigger then the execution doesn't proceed further. The execution of the further statements/commands never happens.
Crazy Record Day
Firefox 3 is planned to be launched worldwide on June 17. Mozilla Corp. calls this a Download Day and wants to set a Guinness World Record for the most downloaded software in 24 hours. Why? I am not so sure, but if the software comes with a tag as the most downloaded, or from another point of view, the most commonly used browser in the world, what's the loss?! This software deserves it.
For this, they also want us to pledge to make 17th the record day. Again why? Crazy!
For the memories.
In Dharwad between 23-25. If good times are not for memories then what are they worth for?
Some of the incidents and things I wanted to note:
- Friend's recollection of his experience when he had to travel second class in a train to reach Bangalore. It was when he was running thru some sort of crisis, which can better remain untold here. His field of work and education is very unlike mine and the rest of us (IT graduates). And so are the difficulties that he comes across... Will have to keep an eye on the development of his future. His experiences make for a good caution for the future and an emotional hard lesson to preach and remember. (If life is not about the reiteration of difficult experiences and surviving thru it, then what meaning does the statement 'My Life' highlight?)
- A night's bachelor party under the candle on a tree top. This tree top hotel was our adda during B.E years. The same tree which must have heard love disappointments and failures all thru those days, now had a different story to listen. Courtesy my friend. The tree is happy. So are we. The party rasied the spirits and we raised the spirits to his future. (Without the high spirits what is it worth partying about?)
- Drive back home after the party on Pulsar. Every time I drive Bajaj Pulsar, I seem to like it even more. Driving at close to 100kph on the road during mid-night gave me a double high. An experience of thrill, when life and death seem just a thin line away, was exhilarating. I somehow feel that the time has come for me to face more such thrilling experiences. But the troubling question that hogs my mind is: Am I ready? (If ever I say that I know I am ready - then its time I kill myself... or somebody shoot me!)
- Homa
performed at the friend's place. There were answers to be found and so powers had to be called and sacrifices had to be made. The fire and the chantings, the seeking and the blessings, all had an inexplicable effect on me - for whatever it is worth. If not for me, at least for the concerned. Interestingly, soon after this ritual performance, the TV newsmen were reporting a huge lead to BJP in the Karnataka elections. BJP's victory was assured. (If religion is not for the victorious then what is so victorious about the religion?)
- Pretty chicks in the town. They had to be seen than told. (What is it called for what can be seen but cannot be explained about? A Woman's face(?))
- When sitting in the train, thinking about the re-born feeling of love, I realized that I've no notion of what love is. But do somebody else know? If I've to know, then I've only one thing to do- to fall madly and deeply in love. And bear the consequences it brings. But if only I'd first the courage to say: I love you. (Does she love me?)
Specman Unit
What is the type or object type of "sys" in specman?
Specman language (or also called 'e' language, are often used interchangeably) has two main building blocks - "struct" and "unit" (both here are keywords.)  While struct is similar to structure in C, unit is specific to Specman.
What necessitated the creation of unit as another building block for specman? This is another way of asking the advantages and disadvantages of struct and unit. The features of struct is more flexible and efficient than the unit, it so appears that unit is not necessary. How?
"Sys" is something similar to main() function in C. So this is the very first pre-defined object that is generated and executed as the simulation starts.
"Sys" is a pre-defined unit and cannot be a struct because it cannot be used as a dynamic object, that is, it cannot be created or generated on the fly. This is automatically called by the specman at the very beginning of simulation. If it is a struct, then "sys" can also be generated on the fly from within the middle of the code, which, theoretically, should re-start the simulation. This is an impossible situation in hardware verification. Also, this defeats the very purpose of using unit as static objects.
What are static and Dynamic objects?
Dynamic objects can have lifetime shorter than the whole simulation period, while static objects have a lifetime equal to the simulation time. According to this, structs are dynamic objects and units are static objects. So "sys" is a static object which is generated when the simulation starts and killed only when the simulation ends.
So, a static object like 'unit' was required in Specman because of a need to be constantly in connect with the DUT interface (and also with scoreboard.) So, unit can be accessed as a repository of data by other entities inside the program (for eg., thru get_enclosing_unit().) This necessitates the need for unit as a static object inside Specman.
Together with dynamic object such as struct, memory can be efficiently used in random verification with Specman.
I found more such questions and answers on Specman here.
My First Post
I am trying to find the means to satisfy my fondness for writing. In here, I'd like to write all about the random things and random thoughts that I come upon in life.
There is no particular agenda or something that I want to maintain on this blog. Whenever I hit upon an idea, be it in technical subjects, relationships, politics, economics or anything, all that will find a place of digital permanence here in my words.
This place is just to satisfy my urge for writing.
